The title of Hypnotherapist is in the dictionary of occupational titles published by the United States Department of Labor. It is stated that the hypnotherapist induces hypnotic states in a client to increase motivation or alter behavior patterns through hypnosis. Consults with client to determine the nature of problems. Prepares the client to enter hypnotic states by explaining how hypnosis works and what the client will experience. The hypnotherapist tests subjects to determine degrees of physical and emotional suggestibility. Induces hypnotic techniques to hypnosis based on interpretation of test results and analysis of client’s problems. Clients may be trained in self-hypnosis conditioning.
Different people experience different feelings. Some may sense a heavy feeling, while others feel light and airy. Some report a tingling sensation or there can be a total void feeling of non-existence. People have reported seeing beautiful lights and visions. All sensations are usually pleasant and desirable.
Hypnosis works by relaxing the mind and body so that the subconscious mind becomes increasingly suggestible to positive suggestions. The client leaves their critical and analytical mind at home and just allows or goes with the progression of relaxation. In my practice each session is personalized to what the clients goal and desires are. The client is always in control.
Hypnosis is a state of relaxation, which is reached very quickly, easily, and naturally. The alpha state of the brain waves is the one reached through meditation and that is the primary goal. One is usually completely aware of their surroundings. In fact, it is a heightened state of awareness. One does not lose consciousness, will not divulge any information that they would not ordinarily, and can not be instructed to do anything one does not wish to do, or any thing that is inappropriate to their character.
During hypnosis a person is able to gain control by accessing the subconscious mind. The subconscious is our personal computer. When we get in touch with the subconscious mind we can then program it. The subconscious mind never sleeps and this is were all our memory, goals, autonomic nervous system responses, habits, emotions, dreams, intuitions are retained. It is so very powerful yet as simple as a bright 10 year old child. One theme and one session is all that is allowed because if you start to add too many ideas to change the subconscious mind it becomes confused and nothing is changed or retained. The subconscious mind is most receptive to positive suggestions and that is the method I use, positive suggestions.
Of the different types of hypnosis, hypnotherapy is for healing and growth where as stage hypnosis is for fun. The therapist is simply the facilitator that guides the client in the direction that the client desires to go. It has been said that all hypnosis is actually self-hypnosis because it is the client that determines how involved or how deep they chose to go into hypnosis.
Hypnosis will not make a person do anything they are not motivated to do. The motivation to change comes from within the person. No one can make someone else do anything and the same holds true for hypnosis but if a person is trying to change something then hypnosis greatly facilitates the process. Often in as little as one session a bad habit can be changed. I always tell my clients that you can tempt it but why tempt the process because often it takes more sessions to get the client back on the same track.
Smokers have spent thousands of dollars with buying cigarettes but do not want to spend anything to quit and it does not work like that. I have heard that anything given has no value and this is really the case with smoking cessation, when the session is given everyone of those clients fail to accomplish the goal of stopping smoking and I believe it is due to the fact that they have nothing invested so there is no loss to them. When a person invests time and money into something it becomes of value to them. Oh sure we can say "I want to quit smoking" but wanting with no motivation or investment places very little value on it.
There are three things that are needed for hypnosis to work
1. The client must be motivated to change and that change must come from within and then change happens quickly and easily. So make it very clear in your own mind why you want to change and often I will have clients write what their goal is. This makes a clear intention of change that helps hypnotic suggestion to become more firmly implanted to be retained and manifested in every day life.
2. To work well, suggestions must be reinforced by repetition. Habits, feelings and emotions for the most part will not just go away with one session of suggestions. Most of the time the hypnotic suggestions need to be repeated on a regular basis until a change is noted. For this reason most hypnotheripasts give a tape recording of their session so they can listen to it every day. There is no way to predict how long it will take to see a change. Your motivation and commitment play an important part of change.
3. The key to successful hypnosis for personal change is believable suggestions. To accept a suggestion, your mind must first accept it as a real possibility. Telling a chocoholic that chocolate will be disgusting and make them sick it too big a stretch for the imagination. In cases like this, one suggestion may be that the next time the individual eats chocolate, it will not taste quite as good as the time before. This is far more believable to most people. With enough repetition over a period of time, chocolate loses much of it's positive taste and there fore control over that individual.
